Breastmilk discolouration

Our breastmilk inclusions DO NOT DISCOLOUR

Sadly, many of us had fallen victim to discolouring breastmilk  jewellery and in my own opinion, it all has to do with the milk preparation process. Unfortunately, some jewellery makers experience bad luck insofar as milk  discolouring, but the positive side is that discolouration usually starts as early as one month and gets progressively worse. By month three it would start to turn brown. In some instances, the discolouration process only becomes evident after 6 months or more.  With such a unique product, there are no scientific studies to refer to.  

We have been actively marketing our products since November 2013 (even though we've been in existence for much longer than that) and every milk inclusion we've made has remained the same colour as the day it was made. Furthermore, none of our customers have complained about discolouration and test creations we have are still the same colour as the day they were made. The same winning formula has been used since before we started marketing our products.  As a further assurance, and effective 01 January 2017, we store all milk for 6 months after an order is complete!

We would love to guarantee our milk inclusions, but we are of the opinion that it is irresponsible to guarantee something that can only be tested by time...years, not months.  Breastmilk jewellery is such a new innovation, that no one knows how it will look after 10, 20 or even 50 years.

But what about resin?

 Once you have a winning formula, the next obstacle is resin:  UV light is to blame for changes to cured resin over time. When UV light hits the resin—either directly or indirectly—it degrades the polymers. Although this degradation from UV light is a natural process (UV light is typically always harmful to everything on earth over time), it causes observable, undesirable, aesthetically displeasing characteristics, such as gloss loss, de-lamination, cracking, chalking and yellowing.

UV stabilisers are very effective at preventing gloss loss, de-lamination, cracking and chalking, but they merely delay discolouration. In other words, yellowing is still inevitable with a UV stabiliser. Yellowing first presents as a light tone all over, then progressively darkens until it reaches a dark brownish-yellow hue. Yellowing will be accelerated with exposure to UV light. A resined piece that is placed outside will generally reach its dark brown-yellow colour within hours or even days. Discolouration has also been demonstrated in pieces that have been kept in complete darkness.
